In 2000 a pilot project was run in the Mekong Delta using SIYB as a basis for a radio distance-training programme.

The training programme was built up by three main components:

IYB on the Air 2002-2003

  • A New phase of the radio distance training programmes was broadcasted in Kien Giang, Dong Nai, Hai Phong and Yen Bai in 2002-2003

  • A radio show for entrepreneurs was broadcasted in the Mekong delta late 2002 as a follow-up to the pilot training programme.

  • In March 2004 a workshop will be held on how to make a radio distance-training programme. Representatives from provincial radio stations will hear about the implementation and impact of the programme.

A Radio Show broadcasted live

An interactive and educational radio show is broadcasted. Each week has a specific subject and is supported by written training material.

Each radio show consists of a) Presentations and introductions, b) Interviews with successful local entrepreneurs and business management experts and c) live phone-in where listeners can participate in discussions.

Study groups

Participants meet and study in small groups with other business people from the neighborhood. A trained study group leader is in charge of organizing and leading the group. The study groups work with the following activities:

  • Work with exercises and action plans in the training material.

  • Discussions and exchange of experiences with the other participants

  • Listening to the radio programme and participation in the live phone-in section.

Training material

Each subject of the radio programme is supported by training material (consisting of SIYB books). The training material gives participants a deeper knowledge of each subject. The material includes practical exercises to concretize the theory as well as Action Plans for implementing changes in the business.

A "Guide for Self Study" has also been introduced. This guide leads the participants through the programme and includes weekly theory self-checks.

This training methodology is more flexible in terms of time, place and intensity of study, compared to regular SIYB training. It also contributes to general promotion of SIYB and to creating a more positive attitude towards private entrepreneurs as the broadcasts reaches a wide public.

In 2000 the programme was held during the worst flood season but it still attracted more than 800 participants. 65 study groups were arranged with a total of 640 participants. 160 people bought the study material and studied at home.

The programme was, among other methods, evaluated by survey questionnaires to all participants (with a response rate of 74 %).

The main findings were that:

  • 83 % of study group leaders and participants were positive or very positive to the training methodology (to study business management in study groups)

  • 22 % of the participating business managers bought or sold from other participants

  • 65 % of the participating business managers said their business improved thanks to the training. 26 % said it maybe improved.

Improvements mentioned were:

  • Business easier to manage (73 %)

  • Better planning for the future (55 %)

  • Decreased costs (45 %)

Impact of SIYB 2002-2003

Currently the project is undertaking a longitudinal impact assessment of IYB on the Air to see what effect the training has on behaviour of graduates as well on enterprise performance. Questionnaires were distributed to participants before they participated in the training and questionnaires is distributed three months after training.
